Business grants for startups in Scotland

Last updated 2026-09-01

Startup funding tends to be smaller, more competitive and more local than growth funding. It is aimed at getting a business trading rather than scaling one that already is.

What startup funding usually covers

Typical eligible costs include essential equipment, initial marketing and branding, a first website, professional advice, and sometimes a contribution towards early premises costs. Wages, stock and general running costs are usually excluded.

Who tends to qualify

Most startup schemes accept pre-trading businesses or those trading for under a year, and accept sole traders as well as limited companies. Many are restricted to one council area, so your trading address matters more than at any other stage.

What to prepare

Even small awards usually require paperwork:

  • A short business plan and cash flow forecast
  • Written quotes for each cost you want funded
  • Evidence of business registration or intent to register
  • Bank details in the business name
